company's founder Franz Wertheim Wertheim since 1852

For more than 150 years a Wertheim safe has been synonymous with the highest quality security products. The company founder, Franz Wertheim, recognized the need for safe storage of valuables and founded a company to manufacture fire resistant and burglar resistant safes in Vienna on September 1st, 1852.
Franz Wertheim was able to prove that his high quality safes protect its contents against fire in numerous live fire tests. As a "k.u.k. court supplier" his company became a well known supplier of safes all over Europe and in the Middle East.

After the death of Franz Wertheim in 1883, the company started to manufacture elevators. The company expanded further into the manufacturing of steel furniture and escalators.
In 1969, the majority of shares of Wertheim Werke AG was acquired by the Schindler Group, a Switzerland-based industrial conglomerate.

anniversary safe, 1869 In 1986, Wertheim's management led a buy-out of a security safe business line from the Schindler Group and thus Wertheim GmbH was re-born. Starting with an initial workforce of 85 employees and revenues of EUR 6.4 million, the company has developed into a corporate group with sales of approximately EUR 75 million and plants in Vienna, Guntramsdorf (Lower Austria), Uttendorf (Salzburg), Modra (Slovakia) und Dunajská Streda (Slovakia). Today, as it was in the past, Wertheim is an European leader in manufacturing of security safes and bank security products.
More recently, Wertheim has expanded its product offerings to include furniture solutions for banks, hotels and other businesses and a new line of apartment security doors.
Commissioned work is also becoming an important part of Wertheim's business. The increased product offering and manufacturing flexibility is facilitated by a strong technical know-how of the company and its use of the most recent equipment and technology.
